DAY 2 : Hiking Tour of Meteora

We are fully committed to eco-tourism with respect for the environment and the local traditions.
Join this amazing guided hiking tour and walk among the gigantic rock pillars of Meteora to enjoy truly breathtaking views.

The hiking tour of Meteora is one of the best ways to enjoy this unique geological phenomenon and to learn the history of an UNESCO World Heritage Site. By joining this morning hike you will walk through hidden trails that only locals know. Let us take you on a journey back in time following the footsteps of the first monks who arrived here more than 15 centuries ago. Experience nature at its best and enjoy great views other visitors will never get to see!

The hike begins from the foothills of Doupiani rock, beneath the old ruins of Pantokrator monastery. It then crosses through the immense rock formations to reach the northern side of Meteora. Over that side you’ll discover the hidden monastery of Ypapanti and the ruins of St. Dimitrious. Listen to the stories and the legends behind each place you pass along the trail and the thousand years of history will become alive through the exciting narrative of our local mountain guides.

You will get to enter the hidden monastery of Ypapanti, which opened its doors to hikers and will remain open until this October, away from the crowds. Afterwards, you will visit the monasteries of Great Meteoron or Varlaam and then you’ll climb down the old footpath the monks used for centuries before the construction of roads for the last part of this marvelous hike. This tour requires a reasonable physical and mental health.

DAY 3 : National History Museum – Mushroom Museum

350 species of birds and mammals, as well as around 250 species of mushrooms, are waiting for you at the Natural History Museum of Meteora and Mushroom Museum in Kalampaka. You will discover not only animals of the area, but also the most significant mushrooms that fructify in the wider area.

Book this tour and enjoy a guided VIP visit, as well as a mushroom tasting session at the Museum!

The Museum is an “enormous work of art”, an “innovative project”, a “theatrical scenery”, according to some of the characterizations of its guests.

This is due to the fact that all the exhibits are of great quality, but also due to the way they are presented. Two things that constitute the museum unique in Greece and competitive to similar European ones. The animals and mushrooms are presented in dioramas, that represent the natural environment where they live and grow, resulting in an excellent aesthetic outcome. This is why it has become the subject of such warm commentaries by all major media of the country, printed and on-line, which presumably indicate its quality and its aesthetic adequacy. The painting exhibition, of local artists, that is presented in the Art-space of the museum, with theme based on it, indicates the willingness of its founders, to connect nature with the local cultural activity and heritage. The educational programs, the collaboration with Universities, like the one of Athens, but also with social and scientific institutions, highlight the effort of visitors’ awareness on environmental matters.

DAY 4 : Food and Wine Tour

The tour combines short walks in the town of Kalambaka with transportation via a mini-bus to visit various delicatessens, groceries, restaurants, dairies, sweet and pie shops as well as a nearby winery to taste the most traditional local flavors of Meteora. Taste homemade traditional spinach pie, bougatsa, herbs and spices, yogurt with honey and nuts, locally produced sausages and cheeses. Visit a nearby local family estate winery to learn about the local grape varietals and to taste 5 local labels. The tour also includes a visit to the local museum of Natural History and Mushrooms to taste dishes made out of indigenous varieties of mushrooms. Mediterranean diet incorporates not only the basics of healthy eating but also an intriguing blend of tastes, flavors, and cultures that combines dishes of ancient Greece, Italy, the Balkans and the Near East. The traditional Greek cuisine is one of the best representatives of the Mediterranean diet. It relies heavily on the use of nuts, olive oil, legumes, succulent herbs, fresh vegetables and a variety of different cheeses and wines.
